What winter is actually like in Port Perry
Lake Scugog is shallow, and shallow water freezes and thaws faster than deep water, which gives the roads immediately around it a harder freeze-thaw cycle than the Lake Ontario shoreline gets. The bridge and causeway out to Scugog Island are exposed on both sides and ice ahead of the roads leading to them. Highway 7A running east and west out of town crosses open farmland with almost nothing to break a north wind, and it drifts closed in conditions that leave Port Perry itself merely snowy.
