When should winter tires go on in Durham Region?

The usual rule is seven degrees, not the first snowfall. Below roughly seven degrees the rubber in an all-season tire stiffens and stops gripping properly, which is why the first cold rain of the season causes as many incidents as the first snow. Do tires need to come off the rims for a seasonal change?

If both sets share one set of rims, each tire has to be unmounted from the rim and the other mounted in its place, which needs a tire machine rather than a jack and a wrench. Usually yes, and it is a large part of what we do — a changeover takes a single parking space and does not need power. What it does need is level ground, because a vehicle on a jack on a slope is genuinely dangerous. Underground and multi-level garages are worth checking first: some buildings prohibit vehicle work entirely, and low clearance can be a problem for the van rather than for the car.
