What winter is actually like in Whitby

Whitby is one of the few places in Durham with three numbered highways crossing it, and the 412 is the one that changes the winter picture. It runs north to south between the 401 and the 407 across open farmland with very little to break the wind, so it drifts and blows over in conditions where the 401 a few kilometres south is merely wet. Drivers who use it as a shortcut to the 407 are the ones most often caught out, usually in the first serious storm of the season rather than the worst one.

Why drivers in Whitby call us

Whitby splits into two quite different call patterns. South of Dundas, around Port Whitby and the GO station, calls are commuter cars — flats found in the morning before a train, or discovered in the station lot at seven in the evening. North of Taunton, in Rolling Acres and Williamsburg, they are family vehicles and seasonal changeovers booked on the driveway. Both share the same underlying problem: a car with a flat is the one vehicle that cannot conveniently drive itself to a tire shop on Thickson Road.

Do you cover the Highway 412 between the 401 and 407?

Yes, and it is worth knowing that the 412 behaves differently from the highways around it. It is comparatively lightly travelled, which means a vehicle stopped on the shoulder can wait a long time before anyone stops, and it crosses exposed ground where blowing snow reduces visibility faster than on the 401. If you are stopped there in winter, hazards on and stay behind the barrier where there is one. Give us the nearest interchange when you call, because there are few landmarks to describe.

Can you meet me at the Whitby GO station?

Yes. The GO lots are a regular call, usually a flat discovered at the end of a commute rather than the start of one. A vehicle in a station lot is straightforward to work on: it is level, it is out of traffic, and there is space around it. Tell us the lot and the row when you call, because the Whitby station parking is large enough that finding a specific car otherwise takes longer than the repair.

Questions from Whitby drivers

Do you come to Whitby from Oshawa the same day?

Whitby is directly adjacent to the Oshawa base, so it is one of the closest areas Jang Mobile Tire Service covers. Same-day attendance depends on what is already booked rather than on distance. Call 437-788-3377, describe what the vehicle is doing, and you will get a straight answer about timing rather than an optimistic one.

Can you change tires at a workplace in Whitby?

Yes. Workplace and plaza parking along Thickson Road, Consumers Drive, and the Brock Street corridor is a common location for seasonal changeovers, because the car sits still for eight hours anyway. Jang Mobile Tire Service needs a level space and permission from whoever manages the lot. Call 437-788-3377 to arrange a time.

Is Brooklin covered separately from Whitby?

Brooklin is part of the Town of Whitby but sits well north of the 401, past Winchester Road, and the drive and the conditions there are different enough that it has its own page. Jang Mobile Tire Service covers both. If you are north of Taunton Road, the Brooklin page is the more accurate description of what to expect.
